We currently have a vacancy for a qualified accountant to join our team as an Indirect Tax and Duty Accountant, on a fixed term contract, covering Maternity leave based from our office in Larbert. There will be opportunity to work remotely from home and for occasional travel to sites across the UK in future.

This role provides an excellent opportunity within the UK’s largest independent retailer of fuels and lubricants.

The role is part of the Tax and Compliance team of three and reports to the Head of Tax. You will have responsibility for ensuring that the company meets its compliance obligations in respect of indirect taxes, excise duties and custom duties. This will involve the preparation and/or review of a range of different returns for indirect taxes and duties. You will also provide assistance to the business with a variety of VAT and duty related queries and support.

The role of Indirect Tax and Duty Accountant will be responsible for identifying tax risks arising in respect of indirect taxes and duties and escalating any issues identified when required. As the company is a Registered Dealer in Controlled Oils, the role’s primary function is to ensure there are adequate processes and controls in-place in respect of excise duties as well as for indirect taxes and to make improvements to these processes where possible.

Experience desired for the position of Indirect Tax and Duty Accountant are:

  • Qualified Accountant or part qualified and nearing completion.​​​​​​
  • Experience in indirect tax and duties is desirable but not necessary
  • Critical thinking skills to interrogate data and processes to improve the control environment
  • Strong communications skills required to challenge and escalate issues where appropriate.
  • Ability to manage a variety of different projects
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Ability to interact with senior management
